3 REASONS HOW SOCIAL MEDIA CAN HELP AND AFFECT YOUR SONGWRITING

Social media is a hot topic these days, especially when it comes to mental health and general well-being. There is no denying that being on social media is fun and can be incredibly beneficial for many people as almost every working professional feels pressure to publish content and that can be of great help, but it can also be harmful. Let's start with how social media can help you:

Advantages:

  1. Help us stay connected: Songwriters really benefit from being on at least one social media platform as it helps to connect with other artists and find co-writers. You can have conversations in your community and find like-minded people who love writing songs as much as you do. You can find fans who support you because they love your music. This helps you get feedback from other songwriters and enhance your creativity.

  2. Great resources: It is a great resource as you can find variety of blogs and posts that provides you tips to learn songwriting online and motivates you do your best utilizing infographics, quotes, and resources that you can find easily by searching certain topics and hashtags.

  3. Makes us self-conscious: Spending around half an hour a day on social media can make you self-conscious and prepares you well when you start to compare yourself with others.

Disadvantages:

  1. Addictive habit of scrolling: Scrolling is a pointless activity and for some it can be downright addictive. I definitely found myself rolling in line at the grocery store and not checking anything out. Half of the time I do not even realize what I am doing. It might sound harmless enough, but those were the times when my brain took some time to train itself. I would probably think about the song I was writing about. You can limit scrolling in several ways. I hide apps around my phone so it's not the first thing I click. I use the Screen Time feature to set a timer for how long I can be on certain apps. I take time off my phone, but since it's a safety device for me, it can be difficult at times.

  2. Constant distraction: There is clear evidence that many people find it difficult to log off from social media. Just like a mindless move, being online all the time gets in the way of most things, including typing. If you find an application time limit doesn't work, uninstall the application completely. It's uncomfortable at first but helps you train your brain to be creative in those quiet moments when you think of songs or stories. If you really miss something, you can find other ways to activate brain like an audiobook or a podcast.

  3. Being on social media can be deceptive: Sometimes it feels like you’re relaxing, you feel productive because you’re networking, but you’re missing out on those moments when you would normally be thinking of new song ideas and focusing more on your online music lessons. Also, you will find a lot of misinformation online, especially pertaining to health of spending more time on social media platforms.
