HOW TO LEARN PLAYING MUSIC BY EAR

How many times have you heard a song on the radio, at a concert, or even at a restaurant where you could not wait to get home to try and figure it out on the piano? That is one of the best things about learning piano where you can put everything you have learned together and then sit down and start making your music. According to studies, playing by ear is not usually taught in the beginning. Some musicians do not even learn to read music, they play everything by ear.

An interesting phenomenon is, sheet music readers, tend to remain sheet music readers and people who "play by ear" tend to stay that way. Teachers from online music training state maybe it is because we tend to stick with what works for us, but we are not content to just stay in our comfort zone. You probably would not start learning piano if you were not interested in growing and learning something new. So whether you are a dedicated "note reader" or already on your way to learning to play by ear, you can apply these tips to become more comfortable playing by ear and learn to listen first to a song so that you have a good start and show and play the whole song much faster.

The first thing you want to hear in your favorite song is the melody. Try to let all the other instrument sounds slide into the background while you just focus on the melody and then try to play it back on the piano. Play the melody line first with your right hand and make sure you find out what the song key ID is. You can do this either by searching online or by trying to match the notes of a song to find sharp or flat lines. You can also try playing different chords that sound right to see if they match, but the best way to find out is to look for it.

Next, find out what the root chords are for this note. Remember that in any key you are looking at I, IV and V chords. In the C major tuner, you play C, F, and G chords and then see where these different chords fit in the song in different parts of the melody. Do not hesitate to write the chords when you first work them out as you don't have to do this forever, but it can help a lot at first. Now you have put it all together, so try playing the melody line you learned with the chords you chose to play on that line and you have learned your first song by hearing it.

Another thing you can and should do is learn dictation. Online piano lessons in Los Angeles suggest that you first hear a song and then write it down on writing paper without the help of a keyboard. It is pretty far-fetched in music theory, but it is the standard material for anyone studying for a music degree in college. Take the time to learn dictation and try it yourself. It is hard, but you learn so much by doing it. Start with a song you already know. It is much easier to come up with on the piano and it gives you a positive experience and encourages you to try even more.
