HOW TO PREPARE FOR ONLINE PIANO LESSONS

Online learning is productive, comforting, and fun. If you are preparing for online music lessons, we recommend the following advice to make your journey smooth.

  1. Decide what device to use: The screen plays an important role in online education, so the bigger the screen, the better it will be. Also, external microphones/webcams/headphones/headsets make a huge difference in sound and visual quality when taking your classes, so try to take the best investment in them. A Bluetooth speaker plays the best role while practising or listening to your class. For conferencing, zoom is the best application which we suggest you use. If you are using Zoom on your laptop/PC, you can download the program rather than run it in your web browser.

  2. Ensure trouble-free hearing or being heard: Audio can be tricky while conferencing, especially if everyone is using a built-in microphone and speakers on their devices. So we suggest making sure you are in a quiet room. Also, since conference software can broadcast only one sound at a time and it picks the loudest sound like fans, shuffling papers, or walking around, it is advisable to choose a quiet room while taking your classes. Also, you can put on earbuds/headphones which cuts down on the noise coming out of your speakers, which can mess with the microphone. Also, you can ask your teacher to record the lesson for you or mute your sound when you are unable to hear the teacher as noises on your end can make your teacher’s sound go away.

  3. Ensure having trouble seeing or being seen: Always set up your camera before your lesson. Ask your piano lessons Chicago teacher where they would like to be placed and place your camera where your teacher would normally be sitting, an ideal level would be probably at head level. Utilize bright lighting since webcams are not very great in low light. So, making things as bright as possible can be helpful while taking your classes.

  4. Taking care of trouble with the delay: Delay is an unfortunate inevitability with the internet and can happen even with the fastest connections. There are a few workarounds you can do to make sure you are on a good connection. Try switching to a different WiFi network if you can or try moving your router a bit closer and check it works. Secondly, try restarting your device, or the program you’re using and work around it. Your teacher or you won’t be able to play along with each other at the same time. So, have your teacher record themselves playing a duet part, and you can then play along later on. Try to play the song through a speaker in your home, that way you can both hear it and your teacher will be able to hear how you’re keeping up with things. There is a bit of a learning curve here, so have patience and with a tiny bit of work, we can all emerge from our homes soon with a wealth of new musical skills.
