5 WAYS OF KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR PIANO PRACTICE

If you are learning piano or any musical instrument, the best way to enhance your performance is by tracking your progress and noting when you pass a milestone or when you missed a planned deadline. This is similar to following an exercise regimen where keeping track of our progress from beginning to end helps us to see what we have accomplished and what we still need to work on.

When learning piano, we are always building on what we have previously learned and we move from the simplest to the most difficult tasks because that is the only way we can truly learn everything.

There are many ways with which we can keep track of our progress some of which are given below, which help us achieve our goals successfully and quickly.

  1. Try keeping a practice log or journal: Before you sit down to practice, note down in your journal exactly what your goals are for the current practice session. Be specific as this information not only will guide you as to what you need to do, but also it will show you in the future what you have accomplished.

  2. Start recording whatever you are playing in the practice session: Hearing what you are playing versus what you think you are playing is one of the most advantageous things you can do to improve your piano playing. The more you learn to listen visualizing like you were sitting in the audience, the more realistic idea you will get about how well you are playing and what you still need to work on.

  3. Review older pieces that you already learned: You will be surprised to notice how easy some things are now that were challenging for you earlier. This is one of the best feelings to get and stay encouraged about how effective good practicing is and this will keep your motivation up and strong when you are learning new things.

  4. Start playing for your family members and/or your friends: Most of the time, there are people in our immediate environment that want to listen to our playing and are the best judge of how we have improved over time. This can be very beneficial and sometimes they will hear things that we have not even noticed but show improvement as well. Take advantage of their valuable input which helps you to stay on track with your goals.

  5. Follow a specific plan of action or specific curriculum: A curriculum is similar to a map of where we are going and how we are going to get there, and it will also provide you with a method to check or test your knowledge. This is also a great tool to show yourself what you may need to go back and review or work on more before moving on. Houston piano lessons show you a wonderful curriculum that is online and easily accessible and provides all types of different ways to help you learn and check to make sure you are retaining everything as you move through each level.

If you follow these five ways, you’ll be amazed at how much more you get done in your practice and how much faster you are reaching your piano playing goals.
