TIPS TO IMPROVE LYRICS WRITING

There are so many different types of music out there today, and that would be impossible to cover all types of genres. But whatever your music genre, if you want to be a successful songwriter, you will need to master lyric writing. You can do this easily by joining songwriting classes.

If you are looking for ways to improve lyric writing, we have following nine tips divided into lyric inspiration areas, technique, and structure, that should help you get there.

INSPIRATION TIPS

1) Write all the IDEAs

When you write lyrics, sometimes your creative juices run out. Inspiration comes when you least expect it, so keep a record of all the ideas that come to your mind as you go about your life.

2. START WITH NONSENSE LYRICS

Fill your song with nonsense words. They can be complete words or simple scattering syllables. The form does not matter - it is essential to use words to describe the song and hear how it "plays" with the sound. Starting with silly lyrics is sure to make an awesome song.

3. CHOOSE A UNIVERSAL THEME AND MAKE IT PERSONAL

One of my favorite all-time songwriting tips is to start with a universal theme (song title) and add details to make it more personal.

TECHNIQUE TIPS

4. SPRINKLE IN LITERARY DEVICES

Song lyrics are your chance to compose poems. It is fun to listen to, and it can be fun to say. To make that happen, it is up to the musician to leave some hidden things for the listener to find.

Before you finish any song, go over to see if you can change some of the lyrics to make them more appealing. A small change in phrases can make a big difference.

5. SHOW, DON'T TELL

Choosing the theme, message, and emotions you want to convey is essential.

Here are a few strategies you can use to improve your lyrics:

  • Do not use artificial voice.

  • Use strong adjectives.

  • Do not use linking verbs.

6. MAKE YOUR RHYMES NATURAL

First, ask yourself if the lyrics of your song need any rhythm at all since not all songs work. Instead of overloading rhymes, consider using rhymes a bit to emphasize.

STRUCTURE TIPS

7. MATCH THE LYRICS TO YOUR MUSIC

If you put music in your song, think about how the lyrics will relate to the music you already have. I recommend that you become familiar with the concept of prosody in music through online music lessons. Once you realize that the lyrics have to match the timbre and tone of your music, you will improve your music.

8. ESTABLISH, VARY, REPEAT

It is a good idea to explore all aspects of your music. But it is compelling in your lyrics.

9. CONNECT THE DOTS

If you are writing a song with a straightforward story, you must get to where you want to go with the song cost-effectively. You can't dwell on unnecessary details unless the song pulls. If you have trouble finding the whole story, start by outlining the song. Find out where each plot point will appear in the song. Now you have the structure, and you need to fill in the details.
