A BRIEF GUIDE ABOUT ELEMENTS OF MUSIC

Musical elements can be seen as the building blocks of music that you can learn through music theory lessons. Without them, music would not exist.

Elements of music are as essential as the elements of a vehicle. The vehicle needs wheels, engine, brakes, doors, chassis, steering wheel and more. Without these essentials, it will no longer be a vehicle. Without the essential elements of music, a piece of music will no longer be music.

WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF MUSIC?

Here is a quick flow of the leading musical elements (you will find a variety of these, but these are the most important ones):

  • Pitchthe frequency of vibration and the size of the vibrating object.

  • Rhythm – is the pattern or placement of sounds in beats and time in music.

  • Duration - music note length

  • Structure - the way in which a complete piece of music is organized into identical and contradictory categories.

  • Dynamics - how loud/quiet the music is (either total sound or notes/instruments)

  • Pulse – the beat of the music

  • Texture – the texture is the number and type of layers used in a composition and how these layers are related. A texture may be monophonic, polyphonic, or homophonic.

  • Tempo the speed at which a piece of music is played.

  • Timbre - Timbre is the quality of sound that distinguishes one voice or instrument from another. Depending on the technique, it may range from dull to lush and dark to bright.

  • Tonality - the key to which the piece is written (may change as the piece progresses)

  • Harmony – is what you hear when two or more notes or chords are played simultaneously. Harmonic chords may be described as minor, major, augmented, or diminished, depending on the notes being played together.

WHY ARE THE ELEMENTS OF MUSIC IMPORTANT?

They are essential for two reasons:

1. Making/Analyzing Music - Understanding the elements of music will allow you to understand any piece of music, whether you are trying to perform or analyze it. If we know the key components that make up a car, we may be able to use it to compare any car in the world by asking simple questions about engine size, color and speed etc." In the same way, we can understand any music by asking questions about tempo, noise, key, or what instruments are playing? etc."

 2. Composing Music - Music elements are your "composer's toolbox" - without a clear understanding of car components, you will never be able to build a car. Same as without a good understanding of the musical aspects, your musical ability will be severely compromised. You will not reach your potential as a composer (whatever style you want to write).

Conclusion: Music theory is an integral part of music that a musician can learn by taking music theory classes from their online music teacher and through which can communicate the language of music. The introductory music theory defines the main elements that form a melody, harmony, rhythm and compositional elements (song form, notes, chords, tempo, key signature, scales, and more).
