5 WAY TO ENHANCE YOUR SONGWRITING SKILLS

For those who have music knowledge or work as musicians on different platforms with different artists, writing a song can be a challenge. It doesn't matter how much work experience they have or how good they are at singing. Writing songs takes a lot of patience and hard work. Many artists will disagree that songwriting isn't something that should be taught. This is true, you can learn it by yourself, but you can sharpen your songwriting skills with the proper guidance and training.

Years ago, I started writing songs, but it was not as easy as it sounds. I took songwriting classes, practiced it daily, and with time, it got easier and easier. So, in this article, I have mentioned some tips and exercises that helped me with my songwriting skills.

  1. Start writing-Some of you won't believe it, but even professional songwriters struggle while writing a song. They also get confused about where to start. But there is only one solution: "start writing." Pick any topic, like what you ate for dinner or how your day went, because the main focus here is that you start writing daily. Some days you will write nothing special, but you will write something extraordinary at some point.

  2. Use a rhyming dictionary- Do you remember how we used to learn poems in our childhood, the ones with more rhyming words stuck in our heads? That's what rhyming words do. They make a song or a poem catchy for listeners, and they stick in their minds for much longer. So the point is: buy a rhyming dictionary or use some tools that find the best rhyming words. They will give you words you didn't know existed.

  3. Take classes- Many people avoid taking classes, but taking classes is more beneficial than sitting in your room alone and putting pressure on your brain. And for some reason, if you can't attend offline classes, take online music lessons. A professional teacher can easily see and correct your mistakes. You will meet different, creative-minded people in the class from whom you can learn new things.

  4. Finish your song- Another familiar problem songwriters face is finishing the song. You can start writing the song with total motivation, but the struggle is real when finishing the composition. So, instead of writing several unfinished songs, write one fully finished song. This will give you a concept for your next song. Your final song doesn't need to be perfect or a hit. It can sound not good, but you'll be motivated to write more songs after you finish it, and eventually, the great one will appear.

  5. Combine ideas- After filling the pages, if you still can't find an end to your song, don't panic because it happens initially. Sometimes professionals face the same problems, but they try combining their ideas, and so can you. This may take some time as you have to change the lyrics or melody, so pick a chorus or lyrics from another song you wrote and combine them with this one. With a few tries, you will get your song. Don't stress and let your mind be free.
