KEY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VOICE TEACHER AND A VOCAL COACH

The difference between a voice teacher and a vocal coach is vague, and it can depend on a teacher's definition. Some people use both terms interchangeably, which can be confusing when a potential artist seeks help in matters of style and technique.

The meaning of the words may be consistent. While this should not be taken literally, it can help clear up some misconceptions often associated with both terms.

Voice Teacher

A voice teacher is usually a singer who focuses on the correct vocal technique and how to use that technique in the repertoire. Through their voice training lessons, they explain how the voice works, how to make your voice healthy, and how you can access those sounds in a free and easy way with proper support, registration, and resonance. They build the voice, correct any technical flaws or imperfections, and teach students how to apply an excellent technique to all styles and forms of singing without damaging the voice. Voice teachers will provide specific tests for students to address their individual needs.

The voice teacher deals with all these problems and more. They also show students how to apply a healthy approach to songs and song styles with specific talents and individual limitations.

Vocal Coach

The vocal coach is another professional who assists singers with musical style and performance practice. Typically, a vocal coach may be a pianist, conductor, or music director and have a guiding knowledge of musical performances in their styles. The vocal trainer can help with issues such as pronunciation, music sentences, performance practice, and helping the singer to 'own' the song.

The vocal coach may suggest musical things such as riffs, cadenza, breath taking in phrases, additional repertoire suggestions, and other translation ideas. A voice coach may not be comfortable with singing technical issues, and if technical issues arise, he may suggest that you consult a voice teacher. In classical music, this is very common: artists will use their vocal technique with their singing teacher and work on a song with someone, usually a vocal coach.

So although a voice teacher can teach a student of any level, the vocal coach should meet the student where they are at and work primarily on improving the artist's performance.

Conclusion: While both terms, voice teacher and vocal coach, may be used interchangeably, the difference between both is that a voice teacher can "teach" singing through in-person, online or private music lessons. Although a vocal coach can only "train" a person who is already singing.

If you are a serious performer, it is essential to find a professional who can wear both hats. Both vocal technique and coaching are important for the singer. However, the good vocal technique should be the foundation. Even if you already have a good voice, a trained voice teacher will help you improve your voice, and the vocal coach will make sure you are ready to perform.
